Matt Blashaw's Home Renovation Do's & Don't's

The Denver Home Show is excited to welcome Matt Blashaw, host of HGTV’s Vacation House for Free and DIY Network’s Yard Crashers on March 17 to 19.
Matt, a licensed contractor and Realtor, made his television debut in 2006 when he entered a television contest for DIY Network’s Stud Finder, a search for America’s next top handyman. The exposure from that show kicked off his career as a host of many HGTV and DIY Network shows including Deconstruction, Ellen’s Design Challenge, Project Xtreme, Money Hunters, Blog Cabin and Professional Grade. He has appeared as an expert guest on The Today Show on NBC, CNN’s Newsroom, CNBC’s Squawk Box, as well as multiple Fox News affiliates. Currently, Matt hosts DIY Network’s hit series Yard Crashers.
Q: What should homeowners look for when it comes to working with a contractor or interior designer?
Matt: “Communication is key. Make sure they are good communicators and that they return phone calls within 24 hours. If you call a contractor for a bid on your project and they don’t get back to you in a day...consider it a sign and move on.”
Q: What is your favorite space to makeover and why?
Matt: “I love the backyard. There are no rules and I can get a lot more creative than on the inside of the house. The backyard is truly a blank slate.”
Q: What’s one simple thing homeowners can do to improve their landscape or garden?
Matt: “I’m a big fan of fresh mulch. I consider mulch the paint of the backyard. A fresh coat laid in the flower beds bring a fresh look to any yard.”
Q: What is one home improvement project you wouldn’t recommend someone trying to do on their own?
Matt: "Definitely installing pavers in the backyard. I don’t think people realize just how much work goes on underneath those pavers beforehand to make them look the way they do."
